Recycled Handbags

Recycled License Plate HandbagThis year I am giving both my sister and 16 year old niece cart blanche to choose a new handbag from our handbag department. I am told they are deep in thought as to which one they are going to choose. When I first heard about handbags made from inner tubes of tractors, I imagined something dirty, clumsy and cheap looking. Well was I in for a surprise! These handbags are high styled and just ultra chic. You would never guess they were made from rubber and the styling brought cries of admiration from our staff who offered to model them when they went out with their friends socially!
The handbags made from recycled car parts and license plates are just a hoot, and what I expect my niece to choose to flaunt around her friends in London. They are definitely trendy and for the younger generation who is looking to make a statement. I am always at a loss as to what to give as a gift to a teenager but this year I think I have picked a winner. In the end my sister chose a poppy string bag in black boiled wool. But my 17 year old niece chose a fender designer purse complete with love birds and a heart. I will be seeing them both soon and they are both looking forward to their new bag accessory.

Starting at $54.99.

Reusable Shopping Bags

Reusable Shopping BagsOne of the reasons that I like these reusable shopping bags is their compact nature, since I have begun to find that my other reusable shopping bags- which I have everywhere in my car, house and office are taking up too much room. These new reuseable shopping bags come in a handy little pouch which can fit tidily into your purse or glove compartment- always there when you need them but not taking up too much space. This year these shopping bags are going to be on my holiday house gift list instead of the boring bottle of wine and will give people a gentle nudge in the green direction.

Starting at $38.00 - Set of 5.

Teak Bathroom Accessories for that Spa Experience

Teak Spa Bath BarGiving your bathroom a makeover? Then think of incorporating some of this line of spa teak bathroom accessories made from sustainably harvested teak. My favorite is the teak bath mat which I see as a perfect mat to put inside a shower so as to prevent anyone slipping. I put one in my late father’s apartment to cover up the base of a worn out shower unit and to prevent him slipping. It looked very elegant and covered up a multitude of sins.

Starting at $49.99.

LED Light Bulbs are Perfect for Hallways and Stairwells

Attic Insulation CoversEver gnashed your teeth in frustration when you virtuously changed your stairwell light bulbs over to compact fluorescents, only to find they are very dim and flicker so that by the time they are warmed up to full light, you have been and gone? This is where the LED light bulb comes into its own. It is 10 times more efficient than regular incandescent light bulbs and 5 times more efficient than compact fluorescent light bulbs, and they switch on at full strength. So, no more dim hallways in the name of energy conservation. What’s more, as they last for 50,000 hours or more, you will not be changing those LED light bulbs any time soon.

Thankfully, there are now dimmable LED light bulbs, so when you want to forge ahead with your home energy conservation program with LED light bulbs, the lack of dimmable LED light bulbs will no longer be a deterreant.

Energy Saving Green Products

LED Torch LightsI was having a conversation with an artist friend of mine the other night who was lamenting that products that were “green” were either ugly or priced at a premium, making them out of reach for the average consumer. She also said it was difficult to buy these items at a premium price when the benefits, in terms of global warming, would not be felt in her lifetime but more likely by future generations. I had a certain sympathy for that point of view. However, I countered with, that from my perspective, everyone is concerned with the price of energy and one of our growing product categories is focused on energy conservation. Everyone likes to save money and personally I have found that by judiciously lowering consumption and using energy saving products, I have slashed my energy bill by at least a third to nearly a half over the previous year. I have only managed to achieve that in the condo where I live during the work week because I have control over the total usage. My husband and I live in another house at weekends and since energy conservation requires the cooperation from all family members, and my electricity guzzling husband likes to keep all lights blazing on all floors, the energy consumption at this home is more difficult to control. But I did manage to sneak in a couple of things that he would not notice including turning up the thermostat in summer because I know he hates to tamper with the controls!

Home Recycling Center for the Home

HygrometerMy husband does the recycling in our house and when he spied this Touchless Recycling Bin on a recent photo shoot- he snagged it for himself. I watched him as he assembled it this last weekend with no input from me. Just plug in the power supply at the back and away you go. It provides a sensible sized receptacle for items destined for recycling which can be handily used in your kitchen without making the trek to the garage with recycling items. It does not crush or compact anything but the lid does lift up hands free. All I can say is my husband is as pleased as punch with this new addition to our house.

Priced at $129.99
