The waterproof layer is a polyurethane backing that is breathable to help prevent sweating and heat build-up. The top of the pad is a cotton terry that is also breathable helping to maintain a comfortable body temperature. Also unlike many waterproof barriers, this special waterproof backing is not stiff and does not make annoying crunching sounds when you move. Thank you for your concern.
